PONTICELLI is a new project that Santiago Sierra conceived and executed in Naples. It deals with the Roma issue, in particular the recent events that took place in the Ponticelli neighbourhood, which reflect the sentiments of xenophobia and intolerance towards immigrants that is taking root in Italy and more in general in the western world in this time of global economic crisis.
The images show grinding teeth of two Roma families, the last to remain before the definitive evacuation of the Ponticelli camp, who accepted to pose for the work. The pictures were both used for display at the museum and for the public project, whereby for the duration of a month (from mid-May to Mid-June 2009) they will occupy urban spaces usually dedicated to advertisement.
